Adding UTM Parameters to Google Ads to enable data in Snoobi Analytics

UTM parameters are required if you want to track the performance of your Google Ads campaigns easily in Snoobi Analytics. This guide will show you how to add UTM parameters to Google Ads, thus enabling the analysis of your Google Ads in Snoobi Analytics

Follow these steps to add UTM parameters to your Google Ads campaigns:

  • Open your Google Ads account and navigate to the campaign.
  • Click on the "Settings" tab in the left menu, then select "Additional settings"
  • Scroll down to "Campaign URL options" and expand the section.
  • In the "Tracking template" field, add your UTM parameters using this format: {lpurl}?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign={campaignid}&utm_content={creative}&utm_term={keyword}
  • {lpurl}: Represents the landing page URL
  • utm_source:  = the traffic source (E.G., google)
  • utm_medium: Means the marketing medium (E.G., cpc for cost-per-click)
  • utm_campaign: Is the campaign name or ID (E.G., {campaignid})
  • utm_content: Differentiates ads or links (E.G., {creative} for ad variations)
  • utm_termHolds the paid keywords (E.G., {keyword})
  • Click "Save" to apply the changes to your campaign.

Note you will at least need utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign for this method to function, but utm_content and utm_term provide additional information.

To streamline the process, consider using the Google Analytics Campaign URL Builder to generate UTM-tagged URLs easily.

By implementing UTM parameters in your Google Ads campaigns, you can track the performance of individual ads, keywords, and campaigns in Snoobi Analytics. If you are also participating in the beta test for the Google Ads Landing Page in Snoobi, then segmentation and filtering are even easier.

Automating UTM Parameter Addition in Google Ads

Adding UTM parameters manually to each campaign will be time-consuming if you manage multiple campaigns. Google Ads offers a way to automate the process using the "Final URL suffix" feature.

Here's how to set it up:

  • In your Google Ads account, click the "Campaigns" icon in the left menu.
  • Click the "Campaigns" drop-down in the section menu and select the campaign you want to automate UTM parameter addition for.
  • Click "Settings" in the left menu, then "Additional Settings" at the bottom.
  • Expand the "Campaign URL options" section.
  • In the "Final URL suffix" field, enter your UTM parameters using the same format as before: utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign={campaignid}
  • Click "Save" to apply the changes to your campaign.

With this setup, Google Ads will automatically append the specified UTM parameters to all ads within the campaign, saving you time and ensuring consistent tracking across all your campaigns.
