Recognizing AI tools as website referrers
When a visit from ChatGPT or another AI assistant should be measured as a human referral, not as bot traffic.
The key distinction: An AI referral is a real person who used an AI assistant, followed a link in its answer and arrived on your website. The AI tool influenced the visit, but the activity on your site belongs to the human visitor.
What is an AI referral?
People increasingly use AI assistants to research products, compare suppliers, solve problems and find authoritative information. An answer may contain a citation or link to your website. When the person selects that link, the browser opens your site and may identify the AI service as the referrer.
This is comparable to a visitor clicking a result in a search engine, a link in a news article or a post on a social network. The preceding platform helped the person discover the page; the resulting website session is human traffic.
AI referral traffic is not AI crawler traffic
The two types of activity have different purposes and must be seperated for analysics purposes/
Traffic type | What happened | How to interpret it |
AI referral | A person clicked a link in an AI-generated answer and visited your site. | Human acquisition traffic. Analyse the visit, landing page and outcomes. Snoobi Analytics recognizes the referrer as Traffic Source, but the session is still human-created. |
AI crawler | Automated software requested pages to discover, index or process content. | Machine activity. Keep separate from human behaviour metrics. Snoobi Analytics will (in most cases) classify the visiting organization as a Cloud Provider /DATA Center. (CLD as organization type) |
Why recognition matters
If identifiable AI referrals are grouped under Direct, Unknown or Other traffic, an important part of the visitor journey becomes invisible.
Snoobi Analytics assist you by recognizing the source and provides with a more accurate explanation of how people discover your website.
- Measure AI-assisted discovery. See whether AI assistants are becoming a meaningful source of website visits.
- Improve attribution. Give appropriate credit to the channel that introduced the visitor instead of treating the session as unexplained direct traffic.
- Evaluate traffic quality. Compare landing pages, engagement and conversions from AI referrals with search, social, campaigns and other sources.
- Understand visitor intent. A person arriving from an AI answer may already have researched a detailed question and can therefore arrive with a more specific need.
- Guide content decisions. Identify which pages are being recommended and whether those pages answer the questions that lead visitors to your site.
- Monitor change over time. Track how AI-driven discovery develops as the way people search for information changes.
A simple example
A potential customer asks an AI assistant: “Which privacy-friendly web analytics tools are suitable for a European public-sector website?”
The answer mentions your organization and links to a relevant product or information page.
The customer clicks the link and arrives on your site. The AI assistant did not visit the page to collect content at that moment. The page may already have been collected by the AI crawler in the past. It acted as the referring source in a human research journey:
AI question → AI answer → human click → your website → possible enquiry or conversion
Recognizing this route allows you to evaluate the complete visit in context: where the person landed, which pages they viewed next and whether they completed an important action.
Which metrics should you examine?
- Visits and visitors from identifiable AI referrers
- Organization type and name
- The AI service that referred the visit, where this information is available
- Landing pages receiving AI-referred traffic
- Page views, visit depth, visit duration and other engagement indicators
- Conversions, searches on the site, downloads or other defined goals
- Visitor geography and recognized organization information, where available
- Trends over time and comparisons with search engines, campaigns and social media
How Snoobi Analytics helps
Snoobi Analytics can classify an identifiable visit from an AI service as referral traffic from that AI source. This makes it possible to analyse the behaviour of the human visitor separately from automated crawlers and other non-human traffic.
The practical value is not simply seeing the name of an AI tool.
It is being able to connect that source to the rest of the visit: the landing page, subsequent behaviour and any meaningful outcome.
This gives a clearer view of whether AI assistants are only mentioning your content or are actually sending interested people to your website.
Important measurement limitation
Not every AI-influenced visit can be identified. Referral information can be removed by an app, browser, privacy setting, redirect or security policy. Such a visit may appear as Direct or Unknown traffic. Snoobi can report an AI referrer when the necessary source information reaches the website, but no analytics tool can reliably reconstruct information that was never passed to it.
For this reason, AI referral figures should be interpreted as confirmed, identifiable referrals rather than a complete count of every visitor whose decision was influenced by an AI assistant.
At the moment, Snoobi Analytics recognizes the following AI tools, more are added as information becomes available.
ChatGPT | Grok AI | OpenRouter |
Google Gemini | Character.AI | Cursor |
Claude | Kimi | Gamma |
Perplexity AI | Qwen Chat | Manus |
Microsoft Copilot | PolyBuzz | SeaArt |
DeepSeek | Meta AI |
|
Mistral AI | Duck.ai |
|
How to interpret AI referral traffic
- Treat the visit as human traffic unless other evidence identifies it as automated activity.
- Compare quality and outcomes, not only visit volume.
- Review the landing pages to understand which content AI tools are recommending.
- Monitor trends over a meaningful period; this channel may still be small but can grow quickly.
- Keep AI crawlers in a separate analysis so they do not distort visitor behaviour metrics.
In summary
An AI assistant can play two very different roles: software may retrieve website content, or a person may click a link from an AI answer.
With more and more traffic moving from search engine traffic to AI-based, this will only become more important in future months and years.
The second case is a genuine human referral. Recognizing it gives your organization better channel attribution, clearer insight into emerging discovery behaviour and a stronger basis for evaluating the value of content that AI services recommend.
